[Swinburne, Algernon Charles- First Edition Publisher's Binding Designed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti] Atalanta in Calydon

London: Edward Moxon, 1865.

First Edition. Large octavo, 8 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches. 111pp. Original publisher's cream buckram cloth with cover gilt stamped design work by Dante Gabriel Rossetti consisting of the famed "Rossetti Roundels," three large, intricate circular rondels (medallions), intended by Rossetti to evoke the relief work found on Ancient Greek vases. Beveled eges, spine also gilt-stamped with title, author and date. This binding is the first and foremost, with a later one issued in a smaller format with plain cloth. The first edition was highly limited; though bibliographer Thomas J. Wise famously claimed only 100 copies existed, modern scholarship suggests it was likely closer to 300 copies. A tight copy with usual toning of the susceptible bukram cloth, seems to lacks fr. fly, though there isn't any evidence to the eye that there ever was one. Fine internally.
