First Edition. 8vo. Bound in publisher's superb Art Nouveau style binding in blue pebbled cloth with lavish gilt stamped design on both covers and spine. Striking original light blue endpapers.. Frontispiece portrait by Thomas Woolner and 26 superb wood engravings by ARTHUR HUGHES. Printed on very stiff, thick card paper. AEG. Bookplate of Francis Gray Smart. Entire book printed on very thick, card paper, all edges gilt. An interesting variant binding rarely seen which has largish pebbling to cloth, and the front and spine are boldly gilt, but not the back cover. As well, this copy does not have the 16pp Dec. 1865 Moxon List of Books at back, which is less common. A (regular paper). Strengthening to inner hinges, very good, tight copy. With unusually bright gilt-stamped design, near fine.
