First Edition. Small quarto, 56 pp. (book, 36pp, and each booklet containing an additional 10pp each). Specially bound by Claudia Cohen in blue morocco-backed pastepaper boards, the covers decorated with sweeping bands and design flourishes of 22k gilt tooling and the spine with red morocco label and gilt lettering; fore-edges trimmed in morocco. Stunningly llustrated throughout with original mounted textile and dye samples. The book with introduction, Gouache Painted Designs, French Textiles, Turkey Red Painted Sampoes, Pattern & Motif Renderings, and more. One of only 26 copies printed, this being copy #23. Signed in pencil on colophon by all three contributors: Meller, Hodgson and Cohen. With the two companion booklets: Textile Samples containing original mounted fabric specimens of extraordinary vibrant and detail design quality, drawn from historic French printed cotton traditions and selected to demonstate the the translation of early 19th-century gouache patternp designs into fiinished textiles. The Dye Samples (dyed paper specimens illustrating historical pigments and dyestuffs), are of brilliant and varied colors and tonality, all housed in the original custom cloth folding box made by the binder. A tactile and scholarly private-press collaboration centered on painted design samples produced for the French textile industry in Jouy-en-Josas and Alsace, c. 1800ñ1825, combining essays by Hodgson and textile historian Susan Mellerówhose collection of gouache pattern designs forms the basis of the archiveówith approximately ninety reproduced and original samples. Housed in a wonderful handmade cloth folding clamshell box by Claudia Cohen, in natural linen with red morocco gilt label on spine, brilliant blue spine and edge panels.
