Boston: March 5, 1902.
Autographed letter signed, H. W. Dudley, on Dudley & Hodge Art Bookbinders letterhead, 299 Washington Street, Boston, dated March 5, 1902, addressed to Messrs. Briggs Bros. A two-page manuscript letter on separate letterhead sheets mounted on to gray card. Dudley discusses the suitability of an article originally read before the Society of Arts & Crafts, Boston, for adaptation into book form, conveying Mr. Hodgeís view that the paper, as delivered, was too specialized for a general readership but offering to have it rewritten for broader appeal, and enclosing a press clipping from the Boston Transcript. "... I will say that the article as read by him before the Society of Arts & Crafts would be suitable for your book bu desires me to say that if you give me notice in a hurry he would rewrite it so that it would be interesting to the general reading..." A revealing primary document from the heart of the American Arts & Crafts book movement, linking one of the leading Boston design binderiesóDudley & Hodge, noted for bespoke, philosophically informed fine bindingsóto Briggs Brothers, a well-established Boston publishing and printing firm active in educational and fine book production at the turn of the century. Scarce thus.
