First Edition. 7 x 5 inches. 280pp, with 4pp of “Publications” at end. Original greenish brown fine wove cloth with gilt butterfly and hourglass emblem, lettering on front cover, gilt lettering on spine. Original dark green endpapers. A fabulous inscription by Christina Rossetti to Mrs. Adolf Heimann (nee Emilie Henschel), to which she shared a deeply affectionate and intellectually intimate friendship lasting over three decades. They exchanged over 100 letters, many of which reveal Rossetti’s spiritual struggles, literary thoughts, and emotional dependence on Emilie’s companionship. Rossetti referred to her as a “beloved friend,” and turned to her often for counsel and comfort. Emilie Heimann outlived Rossetti, who died in 1894, preserving the legacy of their rich correspondence. The William Strutz Copy, notable collector, and the book bears his simple book label. Near fine condition, with minimal rubbing to cloth; both joints completely intact, very fine internally.
