[Man Ray, Kertesz, Krull, etc] Art et Medecene, 29 Separate Issues in Original Original Wrappers

Paris: Bureau de la Revue, 1931-1935.

First Edition. Large quartos. 12 x 9 1/2 inches. 30 numbers in 29 separate issues (one is a two-month issue), From October, 1931 to June 1938, most in very good condition, chipping to fragile spines, internally near fine. Art et Medicine was a ground-breaking, high-quality journal of photographs and essays on art and society, combined with medical and pharmaceutical advertisements, published in France during the 1930s, and featuring heliogravures by Andre Kertesz, Germaine Krull, Andre Brassao, and Man Ray, among many other well-known photographers of the day. Distributed primarily to physicians as a marketing vehicle for the publisherís pharmaceutical products, photographers who were largely unknown but who later became prominent received their earliest assignments (and therefore, income!) in this series. Thus, the numerous photogravures contained in the following issues are among the only surviving examples of many of the earliest works by some of the most important photographers of the 20th century. Other prominent photographers whose early work is represented in the journal include Maurice Tabard, Andre Steiner, Rene Zuber, G. L. Manuel freres, Laure Albin-Guillot, Pierre Yves-Petit (called Yvon), Paul Nadar, Roger Schall, Ergy Landau, Eli Lotar, Pierre Boucher, and Francis Kollar. The Musee des Avelines, in partnership with the Mediatheque de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine (MAP), is offering to discover the diversity and modernity of Andre Kertesz's photographs (1894-1985) published in the journal Art et Medecine. Large groupings of individual numbers are hard to find and sought-after, since bound journals make it difficult to visualize some photos. Extra postage will be charged owing to weight and size of parcel, sent Priority, Insured.
