[BINDING, FINE- DOVES BINDERY, T.J. COBDEN-SANDERSON] Ecce Mundus; Industrial Ideals and The Book Beautiful

Hammersmith: Hammersmith Publishing Society, Chiswick Press, 1902.

First edition. Bound in rich dark geen crushed morocco at the Doves Bindery, under the direction of Cobden-Sanderson, and with signed gilt pallet on rear dentelle, ""The Doves Bindery, 19 C-S 04." Classic Doves binding with austere double fillet gilt borders, ending at the corners with leaf and circle designs, raised bands with gilt-ruled rectangles in six comparments on spine, superb four-tiered gilt fillet border and leaf design on front and rear dentelles. Beautifully printed at the Chiswick Press on fine paper. With the Arts & Crafts designed bookplate of Ernst Beckman and the inscription on the front flyleaf: "For Mr. and Mrs. Beckman. June 1911" (in an unknown hand). This binding may be the one referred to by Marianne Tidcombe (catalogue entry 582) her book, "The Doves Binder," which mentions two copies of pattern numbered 742, to which: "the covers are tooled with a small corner design of rose leaves." Fine.
