First edition. 12mo. Beautifully bound in full light brown crushed morocco by James Macdonald (Macdonald of New York), circa 1910. A magnificent Art Nouveau style binding featuring long flowing stems in asymmetric pattern surrounding both covers and terminating in flower heads, smooth spine with alternate motifs of stem and flower and also repeated on dentelles in linear fashion, marbled endpapers. Signed in gilt on rear turn-in, "Macdonald- N.Y. Woodcut frontispiece and woodcut vignettes in the text by E.V. Boyle. Title printed in red and black. 218pp. A fine copy of a very elegant binding by the Scottish born binder (1850-1920), James Macdonald, who moved to the U.S. in 1873. Macdonald worked for the renowned bookbinder Williams Matthews and established his own bindery in NYC in 1880. Macdonald later purchased the entire stock of tools from the famed Club Bindery in 1909 upon their closing.
